Kerry’s Game – Inspiration

“Where did you get the inspiration for Kerry’s Game?”

Back in 2003, my husband and I were having dinner at The Old Ship Saloon in San Francisco.  Hanging on the wall next to the table was a framed picture of all the boats that, to date, had been found beneath the city during renovations and excavations.  I remember staring at the names and thinking What if they were a time gate between 2003 and the gold rush era?  What if?

I went back for an awesome lunch (chili) about a week later and had a conversation with the bar tender about the ship buried beneath the pub.  He was very helpful and told me of other establishments also located on top of old ships.  He then suggested I visit the San Francisco Maritime Museum to learn more.  After finishing lunch I walked down and had a wonderful conversation with the staff, followed by touring the museum.

From that point on, it was just a matter of putting fictional characters against a historical backdrop that included real events.
